Opéra de Montréal’s mixtape: the most wonderful arias

performed by our stars of today and tomorrow

The Opéra de Montréal’s return to the concert hall continues with a show that brings together the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal’s artists-in-residence and two great local talents, mezzo-soprano Catherine Daniel (former Atelier member, 2008-2010) and tenor Éric Laporte (former Atelier member, 1998-2000). For one night only on November 21 in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, our opera stars of today and tomorrow will be joined by the Orchestre Métropolitain, under the direction of maestro Jacques Lacombe, to perform some of the most beautiful arias in the opera repertoire. Youth will be in the spotlight both on-stage and off, as a special rate of $15 per ticket will be available for those of age 34 and under, with proof of ID (regular prices range from $29.99 to $99.99).

Collaborating with young performing arts companies and furthering the reach of emerging artists are two key elements at the heart of the Opéra de Montréal’s artistic offer. “Our return to the concert hall was a great success with a sold-out premiere for Riders to the Sea & Le Flambeau de la nuit, presented by our Atelier lyrique, in collaboration with Ballet Opéra Pantomime and I Musici de Montréal,” explained Patrick Corrigan, General Director of the Opéra de Montréal. “This new concert held in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier—the culmination of last fall’s orchestra clinic—is an extremely enriching artistic experience for the Atelier lyrique’s resident artists.

“As an artist’s residency with a mission to motivate young singers to reach their full potential, it was only natural to offer a third year of residency to those whose experience was impacted by the pandemic,” said Chantal Lambert, Director of the Atelier lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal. “This concert will therefore involve a varied and highly talented cohort, and I know they are very keen to share the stage with Catherine Daniel and Éric Laporte, who have established international careers,” she concluded. The 2021-2022 cohort is comprised of Marc-Antoine Brûlé, tenor (1st year – QC); Vanessa Croome, soprano (3rd year – BC); Sarah Dufresne, soprano (2nd year – ON); Mishael Eusebio, tenor (1st year – ON); Sydney Frodsham, mezzo (2nd year – BC); Kirsten LeBlanc, soprano (3rd year – NB); Matthew Li, bass (1st year – ON); Martina Myskohlid, mezzo-soprano (1st year – ON); Geoffrey Schellenberg, baritone (2nd year – BC); and Lucie St-Martin, soprano (2nd year – QC).

The concert program will include excerpts from great works of the opera repertoire, ranging from Bizet’s Carmen and Verdi’s Don Carlo to Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, and Massenet’s Cendrillon. The full program is available on the Opéra de Montréal’s website and tickets go on sale Wednesday, October 6, on https://bit.ly/MixtapeOdM.
