Now Available for Pre-Order
The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival (Reel Asian) is pleased to announce the release of (re)Rites of Passage, a special anthology book to coincide with the landmark 25th anniversary of Canada’s premier pan-Asian Festival. Featuring 38 contributors including Michael Fukushima, Min Sook Lee, Tiffany Hsiung and Sook-Yin Lee, alongside filmwork from 28 filmmakers, the stunning visual anthology spans 124 pages with hand-assembled elements and interactive pieces. (re)Rites of Passage is now available for pre-order via the book’s website.
“We look forward to releasing this new anthology of intergenerational dialogue between Asian Canadian media artists that looks forward to the future, while giving testimony to the creative energy and practices of our communities ever in motion,” said Jasmine Gui, Managing Editor of (re)Rites of Passage.
A follow-up to Reel Asian: Asian Canada on Screen, which was published for Reel Asian’s 10th anniversary in 2007, (re)Rites of Passage adopts its title from “Rites of Passage”, a programme at the 2016 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival which featured a series of commissioned experimental video, animation and documentary works accompanied by a live musical score. Inspired by the vibrant and kinetic histories of independent publishing in the Asian diaspora, the new anthology design pays homage to the punk zine aesthetic while showcasing a range of critical responses from generations of Canadian media artists.
From interviews with award-winning director, producer and former NFB production executive Michael Fukushima, writer, director and BIPOC TV & Film founder Nathalie Younglai, animator and documentary filmmaker Jeff Chiba Stearns, illustrations, original art, personal essays, visual essays, creative writing and mixed media, (re)Rites of Passage looks to the future of Asian Canadian media arts. Readers can also utilize QR codes throughout the book to access special content digitally including a selection of past Reel Asian festival trailers and magazines Gidra, The Asianadian, Celebrasian and Rungh which have been compiled together for the first time for the anthology.
