Directed by Quebec filmmaker Nicolas Roy, this feature film stars David The Hague (New France, Les pays d’en haut) alongside Éléonore Loiselle (La déesse des mouches à feu, Hygiène sociale). The actress was awarded the Best Actress Award for her role as Emma at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival where the film had its world premiere last July. GUERRES will have its Quebec premiere at the Cinemania Festival this Thursday, November 11.
At the age of twenty, Emma decided to enlist in the army. Not only does she want to follow in her father’s footsteps, but she also yearns to get rid of an oppressive sense of existential emptiness. Although the strict discipline of the army helps her to free herself, she gradually discovers that in this male society, it is very difficult to repress her emotions.
After his acclaimed short film Ce n’est rien, selected in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, director Nicolas Roy chose to address the relations of power and hierarchy within the army and the injustice that results from it.
