TOP 10 BEST CANADIAN TIFF FILMS OF 2020
In the run-up to Trans Pride, which will take place in Montreal from November 19 to 21, Les Films du 3 Mars (F3M)and Parabola Films are pleased to announce that the documentary UN VRAI GENTLEMAN (NO ORDINARY MAN) by Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt will be available on DVD, in French and original version, starting November 16. The feature film is also added to the catalog of the subscription video platformF3M.CA on which subscribers can already take advantage of an offer of nearly 200 films available at all times.
A TRUE GENTLEMAN offers a dive into the life of jazz musician and trans culture icon Billy Tipton. Complex and beautiful, this innovative film highlights a community that vibrates in unison to honor the legacy of this unlikely hero.
For decades, the life of American jazz musician Billy Tipton was presented as the story of an ambitious woman posing as a man in order to pursue a musical career. In A TRUE GENTLEMAN, Billy Tipton’s story is rethought and performed by trans artists who collectively paint the portrait of this unlikely hero. The filmmakers teamed up with Billy Tipton’s son, Billy Jr., to honor this complex and controversial legacy: how to tell the story of a person who hid in broad daylight, but did everything to be seen? A TRUE GENTLEMAN features some of the key players in the trans community, including Marquise Vilsón, Scott Turner Schofield, Susan Stryker, C. Riley Snorton, and Thomas Page McBee, among others.
Selected as one of TIFF’s Top Ten, the feature film also received the New Looks Award at TIFF’s Top Ten at the 23and edition of the RIDM as well as the Special Mention – Magnus Isacsson Prize, awarded to an emerging Canadian director for a film of social conscience. It should also be noted that the documentary received the Best Canadian Feature Film Award., won at the Toronto Inside Out Festival in 2020.
A TRUE GENTLEMAN will be available DVD, in French and original version, from November 16th. Subscribers of the platform F3M.CA will be able to see the title as part of their subscription on the same day.
