What most wanted almost from the beginning is occurring this the third season of the series. Mindy (played by Mindy Kaling) and Danny (played by Chris Messina) are a couple. It is totally a case of opposites attracting. Mindy is fun, loose and serious about eating not working out whereas Danny is focused, disciplined and all about a good workout. Yet they work as a couple. Somehow…
As it was a series on Fox (2014-15) there are 22 episodes of the quirky 30 minute sitcom. A total star maker for Kaling, as she moved from a supporting player on The Office to her own series, it also brings attention to plenty of the supporting cast like Messina, Ike Barinholtz, Adam Pally, Ed Weeks, and Xosha Roquemore. It is also a season that features plenty of great guest stars like Rhea Perlman, Mark Duplass, Randall Park, Niecy Nash, Shonda Rhimes, Julia Stiles, Ana Gasteyer, Chrissy Teigen, John Cho, Vanessa Williams, Kris Jenner, Stephen Colbert, Laverne Cox, Laura Dern, and Max Greenfield.
Fun storylines abound as you would expect from a Mindy Kaling show. Laugh along as Mindy tries to win the approval of Danny’s mom, Mindy and Danny relationship boundaries, Mindy being forced by her boss to act as a mentor to young doctors, Mindy playing matchmaker, Morgan, in a case of mistaken identity, going on a perfect date, and Mindy attending Stanford University on a fellowship. Nothing typical ever happens here as there is always a twist on even the most overused plots like a girlfriend expecting her boyfriend to propose, long-distance relationships and a woman struggling with body image. Never a boring moment to be found here and the laughs come fast and furious.
What is important about the show is that it is one of the first times an Indian-American led their own television show. Unfortunately, after this season Fox canceled the series despite the fact that this season ends with a cliffhanger. Fortunately for fans who like atypical comedy Hulu decided to pick it up and the series continued for another three seasons. Throughout its run, no matter the home, The Mindy Project was a fan favourite.
