It is the return of Snake! Kurt Russell is Snake, an eyepatch-wearing, long haired bank robber, who was introduced to us in 1981 as he was the hero in Escape From New York. He is back 15 years later for more thrills and laughs, but this time he will attempt an escape from another large American city – Los Angeles.
Cult film fans fell in love with director John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Clamouring for more and definitely wanting more Snake they had to wait quite a while for the next chapter. Prepare yourself for plenty of fromage a la dialogue and special effects variety. Both are rather poor and yet you find yourself with a soft spot for the film. Prepare yourself for plenty of absurd and it delivers in spades. I mean, I defy you to not crack up over the ridiculous of the surf scene alone. Oh, and did I mention the surfing happens on Wilshire Blvd?
In a post-apocalyptic world – the year 2013, the city of Los Angeles has been reduced to rubble by a 9.6 earthquake. Not only rubble but an island where the undesirables are shipped off to. Snake (played by Kurt Russell) is called upon by the government to wade through all the crap to try and locate a doomsday device. There it is, there is the entire story. Carpenter certainly goes for the KISS ( keeps it simple stupid) method of filmmaking. Which, for this kind of story, is probably the wisest move.
With it being brought up to 4K crystal clear pictures, the visuals have never looked better. That is where the good ends, though unfortunately. Escape from New York was heads and shoulders better. You do get appearances by Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, Pam Grier, Cliff Robertson, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, and Michelle Forbes to get you through.
