Natalie McCool’s new single ‘Memory Girl’ has been released ahead of SXSW next week. She plays the Sound City showcase at The Green Jay at 8 pm on Wednesday.
Singer, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Natalie McCool has created a new single as a follow up to her 2021 album ‘Memory Girl’. The album does not feature a title track, so Natalie asked her fans to share their nostalgic stories to be used as inspiration for this new single, released on 5th April through her own label Fortress Sounds via AWAL. Natalie is a recent recipient of the Arts Council’s Developing Your Creative Practice Fund, which has enabled her to work closely with a number of experienced producers in order to hone her own skills, this self-produced single is the first fruit of this support.
The first performance of this new single will be at SXSW. Natalie was due to showcase in 2020 (before the world ended!), but now comes armed with her new album along with a single to premiere. Her official showcase comes courtesy of Liverpool taste-maker festival Sound City, who takes over The Green Jay on Wednesday evening.
About new single ‘Memory Girl’ Natalie shares:
I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself as an artist and songwriter. Sometimes that curveball move which puts you outside of your comfort zone leads to an amazing discovery, and I love experiencing that.
Because Memory Girl (the album) is so rooted in my own story and memories, I wanted to ask my fans for theirs – for inspiration, for something more that felt exciting and inclusive.
What I received from them was above and beyond my initial expectation, I was truly in awe of some of them. The one that resonated with me the most was a man’s story about growing up with his twin sister, growing apart, growing together again through life.
I really connected with it because it made me think of my own family, parents, grandparents – how they were when they were young and travelling through life in their own stories, growing up. It also felt like a continuation of the album – which has themes of mirroring, and twin imagery. I was so connected to it that when I came to write the song it made me very emotional.
There is real weight attached to creating work around someone else’s story, and I wanted to celebrate and respect that. I’m really proud of the song and production.
