I have always thought that action films are Mark Wahlberg’s comfort zone. It is where he is most at ease and believable. The man behind the Oscar winner Training Day, Antoine Fuqua, brings us a straight-up action film here. Shooter is filled with tension, gun fights, double crosses, and a man on the run trying to clear his name for a crime he did not commit.
This is not art. It is a movie as opposed to a film. There is a difference, people. Both can be entertaining, though. Sometimes you are just in the mood for some adrenaline pumping action. All pistons are pumping in the action here. There is a little layer of something deeper going on with the conspiracies that are part of the plot, but, let’s not kid ourselves, what Wahlberg, Fuqua and you (since you sat down to watch Shooter) focus on in the film is the action. Due to the substance to the story, it is an action film that you can choose to watch several times and not be bored with. Plus in 4K it looks and sounds great!
Intense and violent. But you kinda know that going in, right? So it is not all that shocking. All the special effects are solid and the visuals cool. Some might complain that it is like the poorer cousin of films like the Bourne series but I argue that there is plenty of room on that particular film shelf.
Wahlberg is very believable as the disgraced military man. He brings plenty of quirks to his character. We all know that he can do stoic and that is something he is asked to do throughout here. The rest of the cast is decent (nice to see Ned Beatty and Danny Glover) except for Kate Mara. She is rather annoying as her character. Thankfully she only is in a handful of scenes.
Living away from everything and everyone in the Rockies, former sharp shooter Bob Lee Swagger (played by Mark Wahlberg) is not longer part of the military as he had been betrayed by them during a mission in Ehtiopia. His now quiet life is about to change.
Colonel Isaac Johnson (played by Danny Glover) finds and approaches Swagger as he has received intel that the President might be assassinated in the next couple of weeks at one of three places he is scheduled to be. Swagger agrees but when the President is shot anyway, guess who is the fall guy again?
This forces him back underground. Swagger is wounded and being hunted by many. Still he tries to figure out who has set him up again.
