Still in the glow of the Bejing Winter Olympics, the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Championships are happening. For Montrealers, we are lucky in that they will be held here on the weekend of April 8-10, 2022 at the Maurice Richard Arena. Canada won four medals in Bejing so come into the Championships on a high.
As the final event of the season for short track speed skating, the Championships features only the best of the best of the sport. The male and female skaters involved will compete for medals in 500m, 1000m, 1500m, and the 3000m women’s and 5000m men’s relays. A bonus is that the top eight skaters of each gender after the individual races will compete in the 3000m super-final. That super-final helps to determine the overall champions.
The Championships take on even more importance than usual as the legendary Quebec short track speed skater Charles Hamelin has announced his retirement. These will be his last races. So those in attendance will take part in short track history. Besides Hamelin, the Canadian team will depend on the likes of Kim Boutin and Steven Dubois. International stars like Ariana Fontana of Italy, Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands and Shaoang Liu of Hungary will also be there.
