After selling out three London headline shows including Omeara and The Courtyard Theatre before even releasing his debut, Jack Cullen drops long-awaited single ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ co-produced by The Roots and featuring multi-Platinum lofi rapper and past collaborator Snøw, with Questlove on drums out now on Glassnote Records.
Reverse engineering a future hit through Snøw and Poetics’ use of ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ as a sample on the 2.5 million-time streamed ‘Spilled My Coffee’, earned the London newcomer namechecks from Zane Lowe on his #WorldFirst on Apple Music 1, as well as Annie Mac and Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 across three iterations of the track including features and a rework from HONNE, Rxseboy and Allday.
Debut ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ is one of a clutch of songs that Jack has worked on with The Roots, with a promise of more to come later in the year. Seeing the positive in a negative is central to the spirit of the single, on which he lists all the small things that go wrong daily (getting the wrong train, being caught speeding, etc), and offers an alternative; what if, instead of letting things get on top of you, you just let it go instead?
Having recorded a demo version of the track Jack thought it needed a little extra something and sent it to The Roots, as a longshot, to see if they fancied working on it. Questlove and the rest of the band loved what they heard and jumped on it. He understandably describes this as “pretty surreal and amazing. The coolest thing is the idea that The Roots have put my music on and played to it.” Sampling ‘It Doesn’t Matter’, last year ‘Spilled My Coffee’ proved itself to be one of the most viral lofi rap tracks of 2021. It infiltrated the lofi YouTube community, known especially for the 9 million subscribers-strong “lofi hip hop radio – beats to study/relax to”. The track was added to over 30 YouTube channels within the thriving online faction, including support from flagship tastemakers The Bootleg Boy (4.2M subs) and Aurora Vibes (1.6M subs). The track also found its way into the TikTok macrocosm, being used repeatedly by creators and reaching a total of 20M users. ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ ft.
