OPÉRA DE MONTRÉAL 2022-23 SEASON

STORIES ONLY OPERA CAN TELL!

The Opéra de Montréal is very excited to launch its 2022-23 season, featuring an astonishingly diverse program of works including Il Trovatore, La beauté du monde, Ainadamar, Madama Butterfly, and Yourcenar – une île de passions. With performances starting in late summer, the company is focusing both on great classics of the repertoire and new works. Audiences can also expect to see productions never before presented in Montreal, with new sets and costumes, and original stage direction.

“Throughout the pandemic, what we heard from our audience was how eager people were to return to the opera,” stated Patrick Corrigan, General Director of the Opéra de Montréal. “We are convinced that this new season will not only live up to this expectation but will also satisfy lovers of culture, from newcomers to seasoned music fans,” he added.

A young woman’s dangerous quest to avenge her mother’s death in Verdi’s Il Trovatore; the shattering war drama that inspired Bilodeau’s La beauté du monde; a journey to the heart of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca’s life and political ideals in Golijov’s Ainadamar; the tragic fate of a mother abandoned by the love of her life in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly; and, lastly, the rich literary legacy of a writer who transformed her own dualities into a relentless force, the Quebec creation Yourcenar—Une ile de passions. Such an impressive array of stories, which the Opéra de Montréal will share with you this upcoming season.

“Given the public’s enthusiasm for the resumption of cultural activities, we sought to recreate those special moments that can stop time and carry us away,” said Michel Beaulac, Artistic Director of the Opéra de Montréal. “All of the artists, designers, and stage personnel are ready, and we are excitedly looking forward to our audience’s return!” he exclaimed. The company is also very proud to have achieved gender parity among the important roles of conductor and stage director for the season. The Opéra de Montréal’s 2022-2023 season unfolds as follows:
