WE MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD

INTERNATIONAL NARRATIVE COMPETITION

2022 – 93 mins – In German with English subtitles

International Premiere
Named one of the 10 Best Films at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival by the daily German newspaper Die Zeit, WE MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD is making its international Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next week.

Directed by St. Petersburg-born German-based filmmaker Natalia Sinelnikova, it’s the story of Anna (Ioanna Iacob, a Radu Jude regular), a security officer who lives with her teenage daughter in a high-rise building together with a carefully curated community in an unnamed forest.  When one member of the community loses his dog, irrational fear and distrust start spreading amongst the residents.

Through humour and satire, the film turns the subject of fear of the other and of the unknown into a lighter poetic utopian story with much bigger impact. It’s a story about the immigrant experience that will no doubt resonate with a lot of New Yorkers. It’s about trying to fit in, feeling accepted into a foreign land that you have to make your new home.

What would you do if your father invited you to dinner to tell you that he is planning his own death? This is what happens to 29-year-old Iris who receives the news that her father Jan has had enough of life and wants to depart. It’s a punch to her gut and such unexpected news. Jan is, after all, an energetic father, a caring grandfather and a very healthy man. Why would he want to do such a thing?

PINK MOON brings two generations together in a story about losing a parent, Can a young generation filled with lust for life understand an older generation’s death wish? In a society that works towards living a longer life, PINK MOON examines the mechanics of ending one’s life and the absurdity that comes with that. Rarely has the subject of death been portrayed in film with such humour, and compassion. And the life of loved ones we take for granted.
