A battle of sexes done 90s style but using a tale as old as time. Men of a certain age “trade” in their wives for a much younger model. Starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton and Better Midler as the wives scorned who are not just going to lie down and take it. Instead, they mount a campaign of revenge of the sweetest variety. Buckle in and get ready for plenty of laughs.
Remastered so it looks better than ever, The First Wives Club was directed by Hugh Wilson and stars a trio of formidable women (Keaton, Midler and Hawn) who are ably backed up by very young Sarah Jessica Parker and Elizabeth Berkley along with some well-knowns like Maggie Smith, Dan Hedaya, Victor Garber, Stephen Collins, Stockard Channing, Marcia Gay Harden, Bronson Pinchot, and Rob Reiner in the supporting cast.
Based on the successful novel by Olivia Goldsmith, the film is filled with antics, well-written and delivered one-liners, a side of satire, as well as a good helping of physical comedy. While it is for the most part an average comedy, there are moments where it is elevated due to the talent of the three leading ladies. There is plenty of comedic acting experience amongst them and they use every ounce of it.
The type of film that really does not get made anymore. And that it is a shame. It is the type of adult comedy that you can watch while on the couch sipping from a glass of wine while munching on a charcuterie plate. Be careful you don’t spill due to all the laughter, though!
