Sometimes what you see is what you get. Films like Sonic the Hedgehog 2, don’t go into it pretending to be more than they are. It knows it is a silly, colourful, diversionary type film mainly for younger people. And that is okay. Second time around the film is pretty much of the same style and calibre as the first. So if you liked it, watch it. If you didn’t, well, the answer is logical.

Colourful fun. That should be the entire review of the film, but I guess readers are expecting a little bit more meat to it, so…wisely director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey, John Whittingdon and Josh Miller have decided that in the second go around that a Sonic the Hedgehog film should incorporate more elements from the game. Those boxes have been checked here. While still keeping the elements that make people like it in the first kick at the can. Meaning the bathroom humour is back, people. And plenty of it.

Also back is Jim Carrey dominating every scene that he is in. Now, sometimes this is good while others you will be like “okay, dial it down a little, Jim”. He takes on films of this sort and sees them as a license to chew scenery like nobody’s business.

Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has settled into living in Green Hills. Everything is going well until it isn’t. Looking for his chance to prove he can be a hero, Sonic is given the opportunity when Dr. Robotnik (voiced by Jim Carrey) returns. This time, however, he is not alone as he has brought another baddie along for the ride, Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba). The two evildoers are on the hunt for an emerald that has enough power to destroy entire civilizations. No bueno!

Not interested in having a two versus one, Sonic brings along his own sidekick in Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey). The two will begin a hunt, that will bring them to different parts of the world, to find the powerful jewel before the bad guys get their hands on it.
