Our favourite upper class family and the people who work in their estate are back for another kick at the can. This time the Crawleys and their staff are hosting a film crew and actors/actresses who are filming a silent movie on the estate grounds. This occupies much of the time of those who have remained at Downton. Some of the family members are off to the south of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess. They hope to find out more about her past in regard to her newly inherited villa.
Many of the familiar faces are back here while a few others have been added – in front and behind the camera. For the sake of continuity (and calibre), the screenplay has once again been written by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, The Young Victoria), a man who is great at depicting the upper classes and their servants of times gone by in England. He just gets the tone and language right all the time. Allows you to immerse yourself completely in the story. Plus those zingers he writes for Violet Grantham/Maggie Smith are just priceless!
Each time a new Downton Abbey comes out, I hold my breath. That is because I assume all the quality and success cannot keep going on forever. Yet, it seems to. This is another one again that will not disappoint. It is true to what has come before it.
Visually it is as lavish and beautiful as we have come to expect from Downton Abbey.
Perfect type of film to watch if you are done with all the Marvel and action films which invariably come out every summer.
