The fourth film in the original Star Trek series of films. It involves the inevitable. When the captain and his crew would travel to Earth. You knew that was coming as the story opportunities are plentiful. Humans coming back home and other species/beings have to deal with the strange new planet and its inhabitants. As far as Star Trek films go this is the most humourous one.
When a mysterious alien power threatens the atmosphere of Earth in the 23rd century, Kirk and his crew must time travel back to 1986 San Francisco to save mankind. Exploring this strange new world, they encounter punk rock, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything in the far reaches of the galaxy.
The third film was such a disappointment to film and, most importantly, Star Trek fans, that this was a great recovery. Lots of fun though it was a risk as The Voyage Home was not like anything we had seen before in the film series. Plenty of laughs but precious little action. When there is a chase scene or the like there still is screen time given to jokes or zingers. Really what puts this one over the top is the finely constructed script. That allows the actors to raise their games (collectively) as well. I really enjoyed this rather early emphasis on the importance of taking care of nature on this planet. Doesn’t come in too heavy-handed, but it is there.
While the visuals have been upgraded here, strangely the audio has not so that drags things down a little for modern watchers.
