IMAGE+NATION. FESTIVAL FILM LGBT2SQUEER MONTREAL
Celebrates its 35th Anniversary Edition
with Special Programs on Ukraine & Iran and Launch of I+N@PHI x FMC/CMF SERIES
image+nation, Canada’s first LGBT2SQ+ film festival and pioneering platform of queer stories reaches a three and a half decade milestone with its 35th anniversary edition from November 17 to 27! image+nation35 features a roster of in-cinema and virtual screenings to offer loyal and new audiences a taste of the best and brightest queer cinema of the year. Once again, Canada Media Fund returns as Festival Presenting Partner helping the Festival to bring a remarkable anniversary edition to cinemas in Montreal and screens online across Quebec.
Including over 40 narrative and documentary feature films and 12 compelling short film programmes both in-cinema and online, image+nation35 offers something for everyone and every cinematic taste. In addition to image+nation signature event Queerment Québec (held annually at Centre PHI), programming includes the thematics: Voix autochtones/Indigiqueer, amplifying 2Spirit and Indigenous queer voices, including the Opening Film, ROSIE; Made au Canada, highlighting the best national queer cinema; Focus France, to promote and encourage francophone queer voices on a world stage; R/evolution: the Vanguard, documenting our queer elders and the paths they forged; First Voices, powerful representations of queerness from countries like Kazakhstan, Poland and Pakistan (the country’s Oscar entry, Joyland), Iran and Ukraine.
FOCUS UKRAINE To highlight unwavering support for friends and colleagues in Ukraine during this time of war and oppression, image+nation35 presents a retrospective of Ukrainian queer cinema, curated and presented by Bohdan Zhuk of Molodist Kyiv International Film Festival. A unique opportunity for audiences to discover this little-known culture and learn about a country whose stories rarely find their way to Montreal screens. FOCUS IRAN In support of the current protests in Iran and the ongoing, incessant struggle by Iranian women (and men) for a secular, democratic Iran, image+nation35 includes a program of short films directed by, and centrally focused upon women and women’s lives in Iran. These shorts illustrate the struggles and lengths that Iranian women go to to access freedom and importantly, their agency in a repressive and oppressive society. I+N@PHI x FMC/CMF SERIES With the collaboration of the CMF, image+nation35 inaugurates the I+N@PHI x FMC/CMF SERIES: discursive encounters at Centre PHI with Canadian film, episodic and game creators including Gail Maurice, Thom Fitzgerald, Julien Cadieux and V.T. Nayani, among others. |

“They say when you get goosebumps, your soul touches your body.” Introvert Masha sees herself as an outsider unless she’s hanging out with her two best friends, Yana and Senia. OPENING NIGHT FILM: ROSIE
Friday, 18 November 7 pm at Cinéma Imperial
Gail Maurice Canada 2022 90 min
Métis writer/director/actor Gail Maurice’s heart-warming debut feature, ROSIE takes us to the fringes of 1980s Montreal as seen through the eyes of a sweet, suddenly orphaned Indigenous girl and her newly chosen family. Touching on the Sixties Scoop and disconnection from Indigenous identity, ROSIE is an ode to finding your chosen family when your blood relations have been removed from the picture.
CLOSING FILM: COP SECRET (LEYNILÖGGA)
Sunday, 27 November 7 pm at Cinéma Imperial
Hannes Þór Halldórsson Iceland 2021 98 min
Cop Secret is the type of big-budget buddy cop spoof that LGBT2SQ+ audiences aren’t afforded, with the DNA of Die Hard and the zing of Austin Powers zaniness. When Reykjavik experiences an enigmatic crime spree, a closeted “supercop” and pansexual crime fighter unite to solve the case and ignite romance.
