Bass Reeves emerges as a legendary figure, hailing from the depths of slavery in Arkansas to become the pioneering African American U.S. Deputy Marshal in the Indian Territory. Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, Bass Reeves, portrayed by the talented David Oyelowo, fights alongside his “owner,” Confederate Army Commander George Reeves, played by Shea Whigham. The ensemble cast includes Lauren E. Banks as Jennie Reeves, Demi Singleton as Sally Reeves, Barry Pepper as Esau Pierce, Forrest Goodluck as Billy Crow, Dennis Quaid as Sherrill Lynn, and Donald Sutherland as Judge Isaac, each adding depth to the narrative.
Amidst the horrors of war, Bass Reeves stands out as a beacon of morality and courage, navigating through moral ambiguity with unwavering determination. His dreams of a brighter future for himself and his beloved Jennie drive him to seize an opportunity for escape, outsmarting George in a rigged poker game that erupts into a violent confrontation.
Undeterred by setbacks, Bass rises above adversity, finding refuge and enlightenment under the guidance of Sarah Jumper, portrayed by Margot Bingham, and her son Curtis Jumper, played by Riley Looc. Their teachings instill in Bass a profound understanding of freedom and resilience, as Sarah proudly recounts her people’s unwavering spirit in the face of oppression.
However, Bass’s newfound peace is shattered when the specter of his past resurfaces, leading to tragedy and propelling him on a quest for justice and redemption. Throughout the gripping eight-episode series, Oyelowo’s portrayal captures Bass Reeves’s unwavering commitment to justice and his relentless pursuit of law and order in a world that devalues people of color as mere property.
