Director: Will Gluck
Review by Sara

New York City has always had a knack for making romance feel magical. A chance encounter on a crowded sidewalk, a lingering glance across a bustling restaurant, or a moonlit stroll through Central Park can turn an ordinary evening into something unforgettable. In One Night Only, director Will Gluck takes that familiar romantic comedy formula, adds a decidedly unconventional science-fiction twist, and sends his characters on a madcap adventure through the Big Apple. The result is a charming, occasionally chaotic romantic comedy that captures the excitement of falling in love while sometimes getting tangled in its own clever premise.

Starring Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, the film imagines a world remarkably similar to our own, with one rather significant exception: an authoritarian government has prohibited sexual activity among single people, allowing just one twelve-hour window each year for permitted intimacy. There is, naturally, one important rule: protection is mandatory. It is an outrageous concept that could easily fuel a sharp satire about government overreach, personal freedom, and society’s obsession with controlling human behavior. Instead, the film uses this unusual arrangement as the starting point for a romantic adventure in which finding love becomes something of a high-stakes annual event.

Enter Owen (Turner), a pizzeria owner with romantic plans of his own, and Allie (Barbaro), a talented singer whose vivid imagination is matched only by her crippling stage fright. Both are navigating the pressures and possibilities of this extraordinary night, although they approach it from different directions. Allie hopes to find a sexual partner but secretly longs for something more meaningful, while Owen sets out expecting his evening to unfold according to plan. Naturally, the universe has other ideas.

As their paths repeatedly cross, separate, and cross again, the pair encounters a succession of mishaps, awkward situations, and near misses. The screenplay occasionally stretches credibility to keep them apart, but these detours also provide some of the film’s funniest moments. Fortunately, Turner and Barbaro make the journey worthwhile. Their easygoing charm, expressive performances, and convincing chemistry give the story its emotional center. Even when the plot takes an unnecessarily complicated turn, their characters’ growing connection keeps us rooting for them.

New York City is practically a character in its own right. Its bustling streets, neighborhood pizzerias, leafy parks, and instantly recognizable landmarks provide a colorful backdrop for the romantic escapades. The city’s restless energy mirrors the characters’ excitement, anxiety, and occasional desperation as the clock ticks away. The cinematography makes particularly effective use of nighttime settings, with glowing storefronts, illuminated skyscrapers, passing traffic, and atmospheric street lighting creating a lively, cinematic portrait of Manhattan.

The film’s 4K presentation, where available, should further showcase the crisp architectural details, rich urban textures, and contrast between the city’s dazzling lights and shadowy corners. Its vibrant visual palette complements the story’s blend of fantasy and everyday urban life.

The soundtrack adds another welcome ingredient. Familiar, upbeat pop songs punctuate key moments, underline romantic possibilities, and help maintain the film’s playful momentum. Although the musical cues occasionally spell out emotions that the performances already communicate, they also lend several scenes an infectious energy. The sound design brings the city to life through the hum of traffic, crowded sidewalks, and the general commotion of a metropolis that never seems to sleep. In a quality 4K home presentation, the combination of sharp imagery and a well-balanced soundtrack can make these details especially enjoyable.

Gluck’s film has enough heart, humor, and New York sparkle to overcome its shortcomings. Turner and Barbaro are an appealing duo, and their performances lend warmth to a story that occasionally loses its way. For viewers seeking a lighthearted romantic comedy with an imaginative premise, colorful cityscapes, and a few delightful surprises, One Night Only is a worthwhile date night choice. After all, love rarely follows a schedule and sometimes the best things happen when the evening goes completely off script.
