Hard rock act Foo Fighters was celebrating their twentieth anniversary together as a group. They decided to do so by making a television series which tracked their eight city voyage to record their eighth studio album, Sonic Highways. Each city they travel to results in a track or two being recorded that reflects the musical nature of the city itself. The cities they travel to and record in include Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Austin, Nashville, Washington D.C., and New York. In each city they travel to the band ends up recording in a famous recording studio. There is also a meeting up with a famous musician from the city they are in. These musicians include Dolly Parton, Paul Stanley (Kiss), Joe Walsh (Eagles), Nancy Wilson (Heart), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Zac Brown, Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat), and Gary Clark Jr.
The series is directed by Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl. The series in essence is an examination and celebration of American music and culture.
