I attended the play “Our Little Secret-The 23andMe Musical” at the Segal Centre yesterday evening, May 1, and I was absolutely enthralled through the whole performance! It’s a one-man show, 80 minutes long without intermission, and the actor, Noam Tomaschoff, also wrote the play! It’s a true story about Noam’s own experience with 23andMe, the biotechnology company.

Noam Tomaschoff is a wonderful actor, and he has a beautiful voice. Most of the play is sung, and besides his having such a great voice, I could understand clearly every word, both sung and spoken.

Tomaschoff also sometimes speaks and sings his parents’ and a doctor’s comments, and it’s easy to tell which is which by his postures and subtle voice changes.

Noam grew up as an only child and suddenly finds out that he has at least 35 half-siblings. We can imagine what emotional turmoil this would cause, and with his acting, singing, and speaking, Noam conveys all his different emotions clearly and forcefully. He has gone through all of this in his life, so it must come up very expressly when he performs the play.

The band also performed extremely well, and the music, composed by Ryan Peters, reinforces the strong emotions brought up by the play.

I highly recommend seeing this performance! It will run until May 18 at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.
