This entertaining performance was proudly presented as part of the Festival Accès Asie — a local non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and promoting artistic tapestry of cultures and generations. The event took place at the Teesri Duniya Theatre, located at 251 Avenue des Pins, Suite #148, in the heart of Montreal.

This performance was a reading of Rahul Varma’s comedy play 𝐃𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚❜𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞, directed by Lib Spry, and performed by eight actors.

Dhara is the meddling matriarch of her family. She secretly arranges a marriage for her son, Vipul, who has told her he doesn’t want to marry again. The bride Dhara finds, Urmila, is a 37-year-old filmmaker, whose career is at a standstill, probably because of racial prejudice. The situation is further complicated by Vipul’s Caucasian ex-wife and their son, who is also light-skinned.

Dhara’s Revenge is a hilarious comedy about cultural differences, racism, sexual politics, family scandals, and discrimination against women.

The play was read, not acted, but the performers brought out very well the subtleties and emotions the author intended. Their voices were clear and expressive. “Dhara’s Revenge” was well-worth seeing.
